Milonga Del Ayer
Part II - Featuring Katia Diamond
My Journey Through The Art of Tango
My tango journey began unexpectedly. I had zero dance experience prior to tango. One day I decided to go try out a salsa class. But when I arrived at the dance studio, I was approached by a very charming, blonde tango teacher who “seduced” me into the world of Argentine tango. My life would change after that. Tango wasn’t something I went looking for — tango found me.
In 2018, after a year of learning tango, I booked my first trip to Buenos Aires and was completely hooked by the live music at the milongas. The raw energy and soul was impossible to ignore. Before I got back to Los Angeles, I made a decision that I was going to learn to play classical guitar.
As I was starting to pick up a couple tango tunes on the guitar, I was still deep in the process of growing as a tango dancer. It’s been a journey, one with its challenges and breakthroughs, but every step has been worth it. I’m always chasing the next level, always finding new ways to be creative.
I love dancing to the traditional rhythms of Argentine tango, but I’m just as passionate about creating modern interpretations of its music. I want to keep the essence alive while pushing it forward with something fresh that can light a spark in others the same way tango lit one in me.
